As part of the European project Active Cities – Fair Cities (FAIR CITIES), the Municipality of Velenje organized a local event on 19 May 2026 at the Climate and Energy Office in Old Velenje, highlighting activities, projects, and good practices that contribute to a more sustainable, inclusive, and fair future.
The international Fair Cities project focuses particularly on vulnerable groups, women, municipal decision-makers, and professional services, recognizing their important role in shaping sustainable solutions and supporting the development of resilient local communities. These target groups were selected for their strong potential to contribute to a fair and inclusive green transition.
Through a series of presentations and practical examples, participants learned about the Municipality of Velenje’s initiatives in the fields of energy, climate and energy resilience, and sustainable mobility. Several key development projects were presented, including the Velenje Technology Park – TecHub, the Old Power Plant – Future Center, and the Pesje East Business Zone, alongside other initiatives supporting the just green transition.
The event also featured presentations by SAŠA Incubator and the Velenje Youth Centre, both of which play an important role in promoting sustainable development and creating an inclusive future within the local community.
Participants were introduced to the concept of a “just and inclusive green transition,” the areas it addresses, and the ways local communities and organizations can contribute to achieving sustainability goals. Representatives of the participating organizations shared practical examples of how these principles are implemented in their everyday work and how they translate into concrete actions and projects.
The concluding part of the event took place in the square in Old Velenje, where participants were shown an example of shading and greening public space as part of broader efforts to adapt urban environments to climate change.
The event concluded successfully, with participants gaining valuable new insights and practical information on how individuals and organizations alike can contribute to a more sustainable future.
